- Les stabilisants thermiques au sein desquels on peut distinguer : les stabilisants de process, phosphites et esters soufrés (taux inférieur en général à 1000 ppm) ;

- Les antioxydants qui interviennent au cours de la vie du matériau, phénols et amines aromatiques. Ils sont incorporés à un taux compris en général entre 1000 et 2000 ppm dans les thermoplastiques (phénols). Les amines aromatiques sont présentes à un taux supérieur dans les élastomères (0,5 à 1% en masse) ;

- Les désactivateurs de métaux qui interviennent pour inhiber la thermo-oxydation initiée par des ions métalliques à l'interface polymère/ paroi métallique. Ce sont des oxanilides incorporés à raison de 0,1% ;

- Les antiacides qui protègent contre la corrosion, ce sont des savons (stéarates de calcium) et composés minéraux ;

A preferred method for identifying industrial polymers

Infrared spectroscopy is a molecular spectroscopy of vibrational nature. It helps in detecting the presence or absence of groups of atoms, to identify an unknown compound, determine structures and microstructures, it allows for qualitative studies (nature of molecules) and quantitative (concentration of polymer in a mixture or a copolymer, concentration additive or impurity in the material).
Indeed, these polymers consist of macromolecules resulting from the sequence of covalent monomer, there are thermoplastics, thermosets and rubbers. They have intrinsic defects and require the addition of additives to improve their life, their rigidity, their sensitivity to aging, heat, ...

The infrared analysis : An analytical nondestructive analysis method

The problem of limited sampling, however, this assertion in the case of thermoplastics (need for the development of a thin film of a few micrometers thick). Two approaches are possible, the transmission and reflection.

The sampling depends on the nature of information sought

- Identification of overall material or object
Work transmission is preferred is that which is most representative. In the case of a powder, a grinding in potassium bromide (KBr) is the simplest solution achieved. The reflection method provides a better characterization of surfaces. You can also use an indirect method by pyrolysis after eliminating additives, in this case, we analyze the pyrolysis products.

- Surface Analysis
For this it is necessary to appeal to specific accessories (ATR, diffuse reflectance, DRIFT, photoacoustic). If this is not the case scratching the surface of the material used to treat sample. Finally the coupling with infrared microscopy, enabling the analysis of faces about 10 x 10 microns, is used for many applications multilayer microsampling ...

- Analysis of additives
If it charges or reinforcements, direct analysis is possible. For other additives, the analysis is often done indirectly through other methods of analysis.

The sampling depends on the structure of the polymer

For thermoplastics, the realization of a thin film is possible by hot pressing, cutting by microtome or solubilization. If the analysis is done by reflection, it is essential to ensure the homogeneity of the material because it is the surface is studied. We must therefore take into account the possible presence of a coating or surface treatment.
For thermosetting infusible and insoluble by definition, sampling opportunities are limited. The analysis can be done in transmission (grinding, cutting microtome) or in reflection. The pyrolysis and analysis pyrolyzate transmission are possible.
For elastomers, pyrolysis and surface analysis methods are conventional .

Large families of additives

It adds to the polymer additives that can be classified into different families.

- The heat stabilizers in which we can distinguish : the process stabilizers, phosphite esters and sulfur (below usually 1000 ppm) ;

- Antioxidants that occur during the life of the material, phenols and aromatic amines. They are incorporated at a rate of generally between 1000 and 2000 ppm in the thermoplastic (phenols). The aromatic amines are present at a higher rate in elastomers (0.5 to 1% by mass) ;

- The metal deactivators involved in inhibiting the thermal oxidation initiated by metal ions at the interface of polymer / metal wall. They are oxanilides incorporated at 0.1% ;

- Antacids that protect against corrosion, they are soaps (calcium stearate) and inorganic compounds ;

- The specific PVC stabilizers which retard the release of hydrochloric acid and the formation of conjugated structures very colorful. Several chemical families are concerned: stearates of Ca and Zn, Ba and Cd, Pb The levels vary between 1 and 3%.

- UV stabilizers such as mineral : carbon black (non-photoactive pigment absorbing) or TiO2, ZnO, ZnS, CdS (mineral pigments absorbing photoactive) - 1% or organic (o-Hydroxybenzophenone, hydroxybenzotriazole, triazine core piperidyl HALS and organic salts of nickel) - 0.1 to 0.5%.

- Plasticizers of PVC (phthalate esters or phthalates, trimellitic) and rubber (aliphatic esters, mineral oils, plasticizers, polymers) whose levels can vary from a few% to 40% .

- The impact modifiers are polyacrylates, the MBS (methacrylate-butadiene-styrene) for PVC, EPR (ethylene-propylene rubber) and EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) for the PP and PA. They are used at rates ranging from 10 to 20% or more.
The flame retardants are halogenated organic compounds, phosphorus or inorganic compounds (Sb2O3 used synergistically with halogenated, Al(OH)3, Mg(OH)2, borates). lilies are used at rates ranging from a few% to 30%.

- The internal and external lubricants are metal soaps, fatty acids and esters, waxes (500 to 1000 ppm) - 1%

- Fillers and fibers or reinforcements.

IR analysis of case studies in industry : Identification and quantification matrices and UV stabilizers, flame retardants ... monitoring the evolution of components in service.

Analysis of a copolymer PP/PE of shield
The additives are impact modifiers, fillers, colorants, implementation, antioxidants and anti-UV ...

- Identification of the impact modifier : the method has required an 8 hours extraction with heptane. Six trials were conducted leading to (28.2 ± 0.6)% by mass phase elastomer ,

- Quantification of the light and heat stabilization : The UV stabilizer (TINUVIN 770) is obviously extracted along with the elastomer. The direct measurement is feasible by IR on hot pressed films (on average made 5 films, accuracy 1%) of 250 µm thickness exactly (band at 1738 cm-1). From CHIMASORB 944 this is also analyzed from the band at 1532 cm-1. Under the same conditions as before, accuracy is 5%. The spectral resolution is 1 cm-1, is the acquisition of 32 scans.

If insulation wire copolymer PP/PE fireproof
The flame retardant comprises a brominated additive (the décabromodiphényloxyde DBDPO) and antimony oxide, the dye used (14 colors) is thermally stable. Stabilization is achieved by a phosphite (agent implementation) and phenolics (an anti-copper and heat).

- Identification and direct determination of flame retardants : the assay is done on hot pressed films approximately 50 microns measured precisely. The band at 924 cm-1 is used for DBDPO, one at 266 cm-1 for Sb2O3. The spectral resolution of 4 cm-1, is the acquisition of 32 scans from 4000 to 200 cm-1 (optical Csl). After calibration, the accuracy is 5% relative.

- Identification and quantification of the stabilization process heat and metal deactivator : the transformation of the copolymer shows IR thermal aging (240 hours at 150 °C). The copolymer PP/PE is oxidized. The addition of phosphite (IRGAFOS 168) is therefore required in addition to that of Irganox 1010. The anti-copper IRGANOX MD1024 complete heat protection of the P / E. The infrared spectrometry is a method of choice for the analysis of polymers and additives. However, this technique has limitations that justify the use of other complementary methods .

Furthermore, infrared spectrophotometry is of great interest in the study of heterogeneous systems :

- Analysis multilayer (packaging, ...)

- Analysis of the migration of additives (physical aging)

- Determination of oxidation profiles (oxidative aging)

- Analysis of the surface of polymer materials
